The Island of Nisyros – From Crater to Coast

According to legend, Nisyros was created by Poseidon, god of the sea, when he hurled a piece of Kos at the giant Polivotis.
Today, the smallest island of the Dodecanese in the southeastern Aegean enchants visitors with its rich history and striking natural beauty. Shaped by its volcanic origins and timeless rhythm, the island captivates with an atmosphere all its own.

Nisyros is the youngest active volcano in Greece, and its volcanic presence is felt across the island — in the warm earth beneath your feet, the rising steam, and the hot springs with their healing, sulfur-rich salt waters, where even Hippocrates sent his patients to benefit from their therapeutic properties. At the island’s center lies a vast caldera, home to several craters, including the impressive Stephanos: one of the largest and best-preserved hydrothermal craters in the world, and open to visitors.

Nisyros offers stunning natural scenery, from rugged hills and wild nature to crystal clear waters and hidden beaches. The island is home to a wealth of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and those seeking peace and quiet. Nisyros may not have many beaches, but each one has its own charm – from family-friendly beaches to more secluded spots that are perfect for solitude or naturism.

The island’s four villages – each with its own character – offer a true taste of authentic Greek island life. Mandraki, the capital, and the seaside village of Pali offer charming streets, local tavernas and cafes, while Nikia and Emborios, perched high on the volcanic crater, offer breathtaking views.

With a rich history dating back to antiquity, including Minoan settlements and Byzantine influences, Nisyros is a living testament to the past. But it’s not just the history that makes Nisyros so special – it’s the way this island combines nature, tradition and culture into something truly unique

Nisyros moves at its own quiet pace. There are no crowds, no rush. It’s a place where things are allowed to take their time — and visitors often find themselves doing the same.
